How a rate becomes a price
The rate is the price of metal, per gram. A finished piece costs more than the metal in it, because the metal has to be made into something: die work, striking or casting, finishing and packing, and GST on top.
We are not quoting a rate at the moment, so there is no worked example to show and every piece reads “price on enquiry”. That is deliberate: we would rather be asked than publish a figure we might not be able to buy metal at today. Ask us and you will get the day’s number from a person.
Questions
- Is this the same as the bullion spot price?
- No. Spot is an international price for unfabricated metal. A domestic retail rate includes import duty, local premium and the cost of refining to 999 fineness, so it sits above spot.
- How often does this update?
- Whenever the shop buys metal at a different rate, which on a quiet week may be once and on a moving one may be daily. It is entered by hand rather than tracked from a feed, and the date and time printed beside each rate is when it was entered — so you can see for yourself how current it is.
- Is the price I see locked?
- No. Every price on this site is indicative and computed from the last recorded rate. The rate that applies is the one at the moment you confirm the order with us.
